How I set up my server

Hardware

First I purchased a Dell Poweredge 2950.
Servers had not yet become extremely cheap yet, so that cost me around $6k.

Operating System

Next, I used my laptop DVD burner to burn several Linux distributions.
I eventually found one that could run on my server called OpenSUSE.
Many people had told me that other operating systems were not suited for server operations.
These days, Dell offers servers with Linux distributions pre-installed.

Web Server

I had always heard that Apache had the best server software, which sent you this page.
At this point I was completely new to Linux and Apache, but people from my favorite 2D Spaceship Game called Continuum helped me figure it all out.

Web Design

I had taken a web design class in high school, but I was unknowingly using an expensive program called Dreamweaver, so I had very little experience designing web pages.
Now I am using a Linux text editor for Gnome called gedit, which simply hilights proper html tags.
I decided to create a template for web pages, and a style sheet, both of which you may use freely.(Hint: the template requires the style sheet)Works in IE and FF
I then found a handy website, which is probably the ultimate learning resource for web design on the net.

Now

I found a website that offers for free a wide selection of hit counters.
Currently, I have no plans to create a more complicated web presence than this simple layout, however, once I have created a self-sustaining business, I may hire some web professionals.
